Bigger Than Fake Internet Points…
Being recognized as a Top Voice in Community on LinkedIn is truly encouraging as I embark on my new journey as the Vice President of the Blacks In Technology Alexandria Chapter (Virginia).
We may have connected from my involvement in various communities. Whether it was as the former Co-founder of Black Metaverse, the founder of the Black ‘Verse (Decentralized) Metaverse Community, Black Women in Blockchain or as the Director of Emerging Technologies for Black Women in Tech, you may have seen me as a resource, teacher, a friend, or a sister. As I head into this next leg of the journey, I’m eager to continue supporting and expanding the access of our community.
What you may not know is that community has always been close to my heart. In high school, I started the African American Heritage Awareness Club in a predominantly white school — because we needed it. While contracting in Florida, I felt isolated and began Sista Girls of Tampa Bay so we could experience it together. The Metaverse has felt like home to me since the day we met. It seemed like the perfect blend of my interests, combining technology with my love for sci-fi and gaming. The truth is, the Metaverse and Web3 are about community; it’s the combination of it all and that is also how I found BIT — Blacks in Technology. In 2021 as I was beginning the Black ‘Verse Community, I was able to use my platform to help others gain access to scholarships offered through Udacity, OneTen and Blacks In Technology.
The LinkedIn recognition is something my gaming friends would refer to as “fake internet points”. It could have stemmed from any one of my passions, like, the Metaverse, decentralization, digital transformation, blockchain, emerging technologies, AI, process automation, data privacy or even federal proposals — anything I speak about. However it wasn’t, it was “community”, how empowering is that? It feels right as I step into my newest role with the upcoming BIT Alexandria and serves as a reminder of the various ways I’ve come to serve with Blacks In Technology. I am truly grateful. 💚
